Preventing Spring Time Injuries

Spring time brings thoughts of many activities around the home.  Getting the flower beds in shape, cleaning out the shed, and spring house cleaning are examples of items on our to do lists.  This is also a common time for people to end up with neck, back, and other injuries.  Here are some tips for each of us to follow to prevent these common aches and pains…

– Take frequent breaks and be sure to stay hydrated

– When lifting heavy items such as furniture or mulch, be sure to bend your knees and lift with your legs rather than your back

– Get help with heavy items that should be handled by more than one person

– For painting, washing windows, and other jobs that occur above your head, use a ladder or secure stool to stay level with your project, verses stretching your back and neck for long periods of time

– Pull weeds with your legs and abdominal muscles tightened

– Make sure to wear protective equipment such as gloves and safety glasses when appropriate

– If you must scrub floors by hand, kneel on a pad and don’t reach too far in any direction

By following these guidelines, you will be able to accomplish all of the items on your list, and lessen any strain on your neck and back.  This will make your projects more enjoyable, and your body will thank you for it!
