Find the Drafts

Do you feel chill in certain spots at home? You could have a crack or breakage in your walls. The biggest culprit of this are usually places where two different materials meet. Make sure you check these areas out:

  • Windows and Doors: The edges of windows and doors are known for leaks.
  • Utility Areas: Check around electrical outlets or light switches.
  • Baseboards: Gaps where the baseboard meets the wall or floor can let cold air in.

How to check for drafts

  • Candle test: Light a candle and move it around the suspected area. If the flame flickers, there’s a draft.
  • Flashlight test: Have someone shine a flashlight around the door and window edges from outside. If you see light inside, there’s a draft.
  • Hand test: Move your hand around the window or suspected draft area, you should feel cool air if there’s an issue.

Quick Fixes

Sometimes just doing a quick check around the house to see if anything needs home improvement can go a long way. Here are a few things you can tackle at home in preparation for winter.

  • Winter stripping: Installing or replacing existing weather stripping will help stop drafty doors and even let unwanted critters out. Stripping helps secure the door for a tight closure every time.
  • Caulking gaps: Seal cracks that you find with exterior-grade caulk to block air movement. Don’t forget to use a caulk gun to keep the job unmessy!
  • Smoke alarms: When’s the last time you checked your smoke alarm batteries? It’s probably time to replace them.
  • HVAC filters: You still need to replace your air filter after the summer time. Starting with a fresh filter for winter is ideal.
  • Fireplace care: Don’t forget to check your chimney for blockage and cleaning out before you light your first fire of the season.
