Water Conservation Tips

According to the EPA, a family of four uses about 400 gallons of water every day. Despite water being a limited resource, many of our everyday activities use water. Here are some water conservation facts and ways to reduce your water usage…

– A leaky faucet can waste up to 100 gallons a day. Repair any leaks to save your water usage

– Consider upgrading your toilet if it was made before 1993. High efficiency toilets manufactured after 1993 use 1.6 gpf or less. A family of four can save more than 14,000 gallons per year.

– Take shorter showers, and consider turning the shower off while soaping and scrubbing, and turn it on again briefly to rinse off. Also, consider installing a low-flow showerhead.

– Always run your dishwasher with a full load of dishes. It uses the same amount of water per load. Also, there’s really no need to fully wash dishes before loading in the dishwasher. Just scrape off food scraps and rinse.

– Do not leave the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving. Shut it off while brushing, and use a stopper for adequate razor rinsing.

– Instead of letting the water run in the sink when you want a cool drink, keep a jug or pitcher of water in the refrigerator.

– If you have a fish tank in the house, use the dirty water on your houseplants when cleaning out the tank. It’s rich in nitrogen and phosphorous, which gives you a nice fertilizer while you use the same water twice.
